Every day we go in and out of a trance state. When we are completely focussed on something; daydreaming or perhaps in a flow - when we are absorbed in a piece of work or just oblivious to everything else around us as we look at the TV or our phones. Hypnotherapy is a very similar experience. It is deep relaxation of the body and of the mind. Some people find they go into a very deep trance very quickly, others remain in a light trance, whilst sometimes people find they can go deeper once they have had a few sessions and feel safe about ‘letting go’. The important thing to remember is that it is the unconscious mind in particular that the therapist is addressing. So, if your conscious mind forgets to pay attention or wanders off then the unconscious mind, the part that keeps us breathing and our hearts beating, is very aware of the messages the therapist is conveying.
By encouraging clients to get into a relaxed state and thereby lowering their emotional arousal – which is often very high for clients who come to therapy – they have a far greater chance of seeing the bigger picture, looking at things differently, move away from black and white (catastrophising) thinking and begin to make real changes to their lives.
Going into a hypnotic trance is a pleasant experience particularly for those who, in their everyday lives, find relaxation hard.
