Couple Psychoanalytic Therapist
Marianne Da Costa
Couple Psychoanalytic Therapist
I’m a couple and relationships psychoanalytic psychotherapist. I completed an intensive five-year couple therapy training at London’s Tavistock Relationships—a leading Centre for psychotherapy and relationship counselling.
I specialise in the psychoanalytic model, meaning I help people make sense of how their past experiences and personal histories can shape present relationships and ways of relating. As these things are often unconscious, I work with you to bring them into consciousness and help break patterns that can feel stuck. My work is grounded in a strong awareness of and respect for diversity. I value each person’s unique identity and welcome people of all ages, social, cultural backgrounds, disabilities and sexual orientations.
I recognise that coming to therapy can feel daunting for all sorts of reasons. Sharing deeply private aspects of your relationship with the therapist can feel difficult. You may feel shame about the arguments you are having or feel anxious about talking about your sexual relationship. I offer a non-judgemental space where the focus is on understanding the meaning of your experiences rather than applying labels or making assumptions.
Before training as a psychotherapist, I worked for many years in special educational needs, supporting neurodivergent children and young people and those facing emotional and behavioural difficulties related to trauma. I draw on this experience to understand how neurodivergence, our experiences in education, and challenging early circumstances can shape who we are.
Issues I can help with include:
Communication difficulties
Parenting concerns
Affairs
Depression or anxiety in one or both partners
Sexual problems
Distressing, repetitive arguments
Disconnect and distance
Anger and conflict
